Like any other weekends, the first thing i do when i wake up is to grab the papers and read them. I look forward to The Sunday Times because i like its layout and the way issues of various themes and subjects are casually discussed. However, i think its becoming increasingly more of a tabloid paper, in comparison to the normal weekday Straits Times. Not to say that The Straits Times is too serious(it has fun sections like Life daily and Digital Life, Mind your Body & Urban Sections which are published once a week) but i feel that the sunday times is getting too gossipy. As if they ran out of topics to talk about.
Just to quote two examples(i didnt really scrutinize today's paper because i woke up late at 1130 and i had to leave the house at 1230).
1. the TPJC teacher-student incident part where their tpjc.net conversation was exposed to the entire school by a silly year 2 student who read the messages of the girl who didnt log out of the system and decided to forward it to the entire school. Now, that's really stupid. I mean the teacher might be at fault for being too cheeky(or rather, over-friendly). The girl might be at fault for behaving just as over-friendly to the teacher(well, they like those kind of attn from male teachers dont they?) and its also her fault for not logging off(having experienced a situation where i had to delete my entire friendster account because some idiot in tpjc library changed my nick to ILoveTits in 2003 <-- looking back i think its hilarious). The year 2 student who forwarded the entire thing to everyone in the entire college(pity that i didnt get the message. KIDDING! =) ) shouldnt have done what he did. Its a matter of privacy and confidentiality. We are often reminded when we forward emails - that if they are not meant to be the recepient then they shouldnt read it). But whatever it is, i hope that it wouldn't discourage the teacher. Because teachers are human. And i don't think the teacher was being overly friendly. He was probably just trying to make the student more comfortable, ie. to remove the student-teacher barrier that often exist. He just wanted to communicate with the student. The comments on her legs being sexy and sporty was probably intended to be a casual remark. I mean, you cannot figure the intonation/mood/purpose of words unless its said. And i guess all of us have taken literature at at least sec level. So yes.
Quite saddening that such a small issue has been blown out of proportion. I think its not a matter of the conversation, but that of the way the matter spread to the entire community.
And the irony is that when i flipped a couple of pages, there was some TPJC 20th anniversary advertisement calling for all ex students and staff to participate in some kind of activities.
2) Some article which discusses that the trees along Orchard Road should be cut down so as to make the buildings more apparent, just like what they do in other cities. Also, its to make the place more lively, blah blah blah.
Hellooooo... Trees provide Shade!! Imagine walking along Orchard Road at 12noon without any shade provided by lush greenery!
And i think the trees gives our buildings more character.
It makes Singapore distinct. And its not like "the relevant authorities"(as often mentioned by our ever so caring singaporeans) are not pruning and maintaining the trees enough!
Do we realy want Singapore to look like any other city?
Think about it... Orchard Road isnt "Orchard" Road for nothing~
